Housing Justice took the lead in organising an event for Homelessness week in the Hargreaves Mall, Bendigo on the 8th of August 2019, creating an event called “A Car is Not a Home.” This recognises that while a car is home for many people in our community, it shouldn’t be. We placed a car in the mall to highlight some of the things people living in a car have difficulties with, like finding bathroom facilities. There is a great deal of ‘hidden homelessness’ in our community, and more public housing and emergency accomodation is needed. The “Hey Van” from Haven: Home, Safe came down and there was a free BBQ. The event was well attended by the local community, with a large number of homeless people coming along for a sausage and getting information about supports in the community. It was great to see the Federal Member for Bendigo Lisa Chesters and Bendigo Mayor Margaret O’Rourke speaking along with our Executive Officer Hayley Mansfield and Housing Justice Manager Kirsty Waller in the video below:
Thanks to all the organisations who supported on the day, including Haven: Home, Safe. ARC Justice, Reece Plumbing, Bendigo Mazda, Bendigo Violet St Primary School, Centre for Non Violence, and the Loddon Mallee Homelessness Network.
